Start sculpting for summer at the beach at these great Jackson County gyms

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – The Mid-Michigan weather might be taking its time to warm up, but you can still find plenty of ways to break a sweat and tone your muscles in Jackson County if you know where to look.

From aerobics to powerlifting, and Zumba to CrossFit, there are several hidden gym gems to find in the Jackson-area.

Here are handful of Jackson-area gym and fitness centers to visit if you need help staying healthy and molding your perfect physique.

Center Lake Fitness

Center Lake Fitness

Located in the picturesque Napoleon Township countryside and complemented by a barn-like atmosphere, Center Lake Fitness offers one of the coziest environments you’re likely to find in a fitness center.

For the past decade, Center Lake Fitness has worked to make exercise fun for all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels. The center offers CrossFit, Bungee, Aerial fitness, Zumba classes, personal training and more.

Center Lake Fitness, 3859 Hoyer Road near Michigan Center, hosts strength and conditioning classes at 5:15 a.m. and 9 a.m. Monday-Friday, and 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

Just two miles from downtown, the former site of Dysert Concrete and MLive’s Jackson office is now home to one of the most well-rounded fitness centers in the area.

Promising one-on-one personalized training programs, an on-site muscle therapy room and plenty of equipment designed for high-intensity workouts, CrossFit 517 offers strength, endurance and resilience training for all fitness levels.

CrossFit 517, 1750 S. Cooper St. in Jackson, is open 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 9-11 a.m. Saturdays and 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Sunday. More information can be found on the gym’s website.

Jackson YMCA renovation project

A group of wise village people once said it was fun to stay at the YMCA, and that’s more true than ever as Jackson’s “Y” continues to expand its services to this day.

A staple of Jackson since 1896, the YMCA features martial arts, aquatics, group exercise and personal training as just a few of its diverse programming options.

A $25 million overhaul of the Jackson YMCA is nearing completion after almost eight years in development. Construction is expected to wrap up between May and June of 2025.

Once finished, the project will add an additional 13,000 square feet to the current building to make room for an enhanced track, upgrades to the HVAC system, licensed child care, an enhanced aquatics center and a universal locker room.

Jackson YMCA, 127 W. Wesley St., is open from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and is closed Sunday. More information can be found on the organization’s website.

Prison City Physique

With a name fit for the hometown it serves, Prison City Physique is one of the most comprehensive fitness centers you’ll find in Jackson.

Offering powerlifting equipment, cardio machines and more than 25,000 pounds of free weights, Prison City has a little something for everyone.

Prison City Physique, 1708 S. Jackson St. in Jackson, is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There is 24-hour access for members.
