SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Pedaling for a purpose, that’s how many in Savannah chose to spend their Saturday.
The Hub, a local fitness studio teamed up with Mary’s Place, which supports survivors of rape and sexual abuse.
On Saturday, the fitness center hosted outdoor cycling classes, where participants paid 25-dollars to take part. All proceeds will go directly to helping those survivors.
It gave people the opportunity to break a sweat, all while contributing to an incredible organization.
Doris L. Williams, the executive director of Mary’s Place Sexual Assault Center says the money raised allows them to provide additional services that can’t be funded by grants alone.
The organization plays a crucial role in helping survivors and is ready to help anyone that needs it.
“We have a 24-hour crisis line. We do counseling. We do SANE exams on site. We still have a relationship with the emergency room department, so if our survivors show up there, we’re able to do an exam there as well,” Williams explained.
Kaitlin Clifton, lead instructor at the Hub says one of the fitness center’s goals is to host more events like this that give back to the community.
“Next time maybe it’ll be like a Pilates-spin situation together,” she said.
The Hub’s owner, Melanie Bruno said she enjoyed seeing how many people showed up, excited to help out.
“When we decided to say we were going to give back, so many people followed through and said, we’re going to be there to support you. So, we’re just loving our members that said yes, we’ll be there,” Bruno said.
This event coincided with sexual assault awareness month. For a list of events happening all month, check out the Mary’s Place website.
