The Saranac Central School District has a brand-new look to its workout room. The school district received a $100,000 grant to improve its fitness center. The money, which came from the National Foundations for Governors’ Fitness Councils, is a part of a nationwide program that donates funds to schools to improve their workout rooms. Saranac was one of three schools in New York to receive the grant money from the NFFGFC. Saranac Superintendent Javier Perez said the school went all in to ensure its students could get the best possible equipment for exercise.”It’s just state-of-the-art equipment,” Perez said. “Under normal school budgeting, we wouldn’t be able to afford it, so it’s huge for this school district.”Jake Steinfeld, the chairman of NFFGFC, is also an 80s fitness icon who knows the importance of getting kids at peak physical strength. It’s his main motivating factor for starting the “Don’t Quit!” program. “This is about our kids, this is about the future,” Steinfeld said. “As our kids go, this country goes, and we need to make them strong and keep them strong, not just physically but mentally.”A group of Saranac students got the chance to test out the equipment first, and many of them had positive reviews. That includes Saranac senior Brenna Ducatte, who plans to make use of the weight room for strength training with the school’s high school varsity girls’ volleyball and basketball teams. “It feels great to have some real machines in there,” Ducatte said. “Most of our old weight was free dumbbells, so it’s nice to get some machines in there to focus on form.”The school district is looking to explore the possibility of opening the fitness center to the public in towns that are a part of the Saranac Central School District. There is no timetable as to when that would be available for them.
