Reunification center established after Brown University shooting

Nelson Fitness Center at 225 Hope St.

WHAT ARE YOU SEEING THERE? WE’VE JUST ARRIVED HERE AT THIS FAMILY REUNIFICATION CENTER. SO THAT IS THE NELSON FITNESS CENTER. THAT IS WHERE THE AUTHORITIES WANT PEOPLE TO GO, TO REUNIFY WITH THEIR LOVED ONES. AND WHAT WE’RE SEEING IS MANY PEOPLE GOING IN THERE, AND THEN WHAT THEY’RE DOING IS ESCORTING THEM OVER HERE TO THIS NEARBY ATHLETIC CENTER INSIDE THOSE DOORS. WE’VE SEEN CERTAINLY A TREMENDOUS POLICE PRESENCE HERE. WE’VE SEEN MANY YOUNG PEOPLE WHO APPEAR TO BE OF COLLEGE AGE STUDENTS, AND WE’VE SEEN SOME OLDER FOLKS AS WELL. AND SO WE HAVEN’T HAD THE CHANCE TO TALK WITH ANY OF THEM. BUT WE CAN TELL YOU THAT THIS IS WHERE THEY ARE ARRIVING. IT’S OF COURSE, UNDER HEAVY, HEAVY POLICE PRESENCE. I CAN TELL YOU THE RED CROSS, A RED CROSS TRUCK, JUST PULLED UP AS WELL, PRESUMABLY TO ASSIST FAMILIES AS WELL DURING THIS TIME. SO IT APPEARS AS THOUGH THIS IS WHERE THE FAMILIES ARE ARE TRYING TO GATHER AND SEE THEIR LOVED ONES. AND, AND, YOU KNOW, PERHAPS BE ABLE TO TAKE THEM HOME AS WELL. AND SO THAT IS THAT IS THE SITUATION HERE. WE HAVEN’T HAD THE CHANCE TO TALK WITH ANY OF THEM. BUT AGAIN, TREMENDOUS POLICE PRESENCE HERE, FAMILIES BEING ESCORTED, CERTAINLY UNDER POLICE CARE TO TO EACH OTHER TO REUNIFY HERE AS WELL. LET’S GO AHEAD AND SEND IT BACK TO YOU. SHARMAN I HAVE JUST A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS FOR YOU, AND WE’RE ALSO GOING TO TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE BUSSES THAT ARE ABOUT TO GO TO YOU. BUT RIGHT NOW IT LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE EMPTY. SO FOR RIGHT NOW THAT’S WHAT WE’RE SEEING. BUT WHILE WE’RE LOOKING AT THAT, SO WE LIVE IN MASSACHUSETTS AND YOU DROVE DOWN TO RHODE ISLAND. JUST GIVE ME A SENSE OF YOUR DRIVE FROM FROM HERE TO THERE. AND COULD YOU FEEL THAT THE STREETS WERE REALLY ACTIVE WITH POLICE? I KNOW YOU WERE ON 95, BUT BUT YOU HAD TO GO IN THROUGH THE STREETS. TAKE ME THROUGH THAT CHARM. YES. SO IT WAS. IT WAS PRETTY, AS YOU WOULD IMAGINE. MARIA. PRETTY UNEVENTFUL COMING FROM MASSACHUSETTS HERE TO RHODE ISLAND. CERTAINLY. YOU GO THROUGH AS SOON AS YOU GET OFF THE HIGHWAY. THAT’S WHEN IT HIT YOU. YOU COULD SEE THE GRAVITY OF THE SITUATION, THE TREMENDOUS POLICE PRESENCE. THERE WERE FIRE TRUCKS. THERE WERE AMBULANCES, POLICE. THEY WERE IT WAS IT WAS IMMEDIATE. YOU COULD SEE THAT. AND YOU COULD FEEL THAT. YOU COULD CERTAINLY FEEL THE GRAVITY OF THE SITUATION. THERE ARE, YOU KNOW, OFFICERS ON, ON, OUTSIDE ON, YOU KNOW, ON THE STREETS, ON BLOCKS, KEEPING AN EYE OUT. OBVIOUSLY THIS PERSON IS STILL OUT THERE. AND SO CERTAINLY IT SEEMS EVERYONE HERE IS PRETTY SENSITIVE TO THAT. AND SO THAT’S WHAT WE SAW. WE SAW A TREMENDOUS POLICE PRESENCE JUST AS SOON AS WE TURNED HERE ONTO HOPE STREET, WHICH IS WHERE THIS UNIFICATION CENTER IS.
