NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Expansion and renovations are coming to the North Myrtle Beach Aquatic and Fitness Center, the city announced.
The City of North Myrtle Beach announced plans for a 31,000-square-foot expansion and renovation of the existing facility on Wednesday.
The expansion is “not only a want, but a need for the community,” the city said in a release.
“In order to keep meeting those needs, yeah, we were going to have to expand,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Matt Gibbons. “So our classes are full, the pool is full, our aerobics room is full, we need more room in our fitness room, so everything that we’re doing is going to help meet those needs.”
The upgrades will include a 4,000-square-foot fitness room with a dedicated stretch area, a second aerobics studio, expanded and modernized locker rooms for men, women, boys, and girls, a new gymnasium, dedicated youth program spaces, an outdoor fitness area, and additional parking.
Gibbons said, “The Aquatic and Fitness Center has been a cornerstone of health, wellness, and connection in our community for years.”
Gibbons added that the projected cost is about $15 million, and said the hope is for construction to begin next fall.
The center currently offers more than 100 fitness classes per week, including personal training, swim lessons, and a variety of youth programming.
Gibbons expressed his excitement for the expansion, saying it will help the city serve more residents and promote healthier, more active living within the community.
The center is celebrating its 20th year, and those who go to the center expressed what they hope the project will do for other members.
“I believe the facilities will be more available,” said member Michael Cozza. ”Sometimes during rush hour in the evening, they get pretty crowded, and the morning, it’s pretty crowded.”
A member who became an employee said the expansion will provide more for members.
“I get the feeling that it’s going to give us the opportunity to add more classes, to offer more things to our members,” said Pat Turnbull, an employee of the center. “And I think that’s when it’s going to get really special.”
The center has a special where the annual joining fee will be waived for new annual memberships until Nov. 15.
