Most parents are skeptical about allowing their children to download social media. With photoshop creating unrealistic body ideals, misinformation running rampant, and a new controversy every week, why shouldn’t they be? Well, certain cases show that not all social media presence is bad, and can actually be used for good. Take Austin Dotson, a social media influencer, who is showing the power of a healthy lifestyle to individuals of all ages. As an athletic instructor, fitness model, and mental health advocate, Austin Dotson has been demonstrating the power of holistic health in an appealing, trendy fashion.

With a diverse range of content on his platforms, Dotson truly does offer something for everyone. On his Instagram alone, he holds 550,000 dedicated followers with more on his YouTube channel and Twitter page. Most of his content consists of his workout progress, and boy, is it entertaining! Push-ups with swole men standing on his back, crazy backflips, deadlifting 400 pounds, sprints across fantastic structures, and more. These clips and images are both breathtaking and inspiring. He also documents his world travels using these posts, as he’ll show himself meditating atop temples in Eastern Asia amongst other beautiful landscapes. As well, he frequently will give instructions for his workouts on his YouTube channel. Here, audiences can find in-depth breakdowns of his workouts, with recommendations and examples for how you can start them on your own. Dotson has workouts to follow along with, videos of interacting with other Gymshark associates, and more. Laced throughout these posts are thought-provoking, engaging videos aimed to inspire his audiences to get up and do what they love. Dotson has learned this lesson the hard way, as his past was far from pretty.

Born October 17, 1991, in Carson, California, Austin Dotson had dreams of playing in the NFL. After playing football his whole life, he ended up playing for Sacramento State University, where he enjoyed years in the spotlight for his undeniable talent in the sport. However, his dreams were shattered when the NFL draft passed him over, and quickly found himself without purpose. Now a college graduate with no direction, he played for the AFL– the arena football league– instead. Two years into the AFL, Dotson had to face the truth that this was not the way to his long-term success, and quit football for good. This sent Dotson into a depression, as his childhood dreams were truly gone and he was forced to take up a job in a mortgage firm to make ends meet. He slipped into substance abuse and flings with women, which gave him a daughter that he now needed to support. The draining 9-to-5 days in the mortgage firm, his addictions, the responsibility of being a single father, and the weight of regret from letting himself down were smothering Dotson alive. Finally, after a DUI charge on Christmas day, Dotson knew it was time for a change. On January 3rd, 2017, Dotson decided that he was better than his circumstances, and was not going to let the world push him into the ground.

After filing for unemployment, Dotson purchased a cheap gym membership at his local 24-Hour Fitness. From here, he regained his composure and confidence as a person. This stark turn-around in his character was radiant, and after creating an Instagram account to share his journey, the rest was history. Now with over half a million followers, a Gymshark brand deal, a feature on the cover of Men’s Health, and working as a commercial actor, Austin Dotson has truly turned darkness into light.
